The Department of Social Sciences at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid offers
four grants in the doctorate in Economic History and Institutions.

The grants are offered for four years, on a two-plus-two-year basis: the
first period up to 24 months as a PhD grant of 1,000 Euros (gross) per month
plus tuition fees, followed by a second period, up to two years covered by a
“researcher in training” internship labor contract. After the first stage
there will be an assessment of the fulfillment of the necessary criteria by
the PhD program commission, and advancing to the second stage is conditional
on a favorable assessment. The regulating laws and university norms,
selection criteria along with the application form (“solicitud”) and the

This site includes an English translation of the previous call for
applications with some detail on the relevant Spanish norms. Please note that
the university norms on selection have been slightly change since the last
call for applications (compare “Anexo 1”, pp. 7-8, of the current call to
pp. 4-5 of the English translation of the former call).
To apply, the official application form has to be submitted before or on 30
May 2013 by email to peif @ uc3m.es [with a copy to Markus Lampe
mlampe @ clio.uc3m.es] together with the following documents:
- Copy of Spanish Identity Card (DNI), Passport or Foreigner’s Identity
Number in Spain certificate (NIE)
- Copy of certificates of completed undergraduate and master program studies,
including a complete grade record and title
- Certificate of average grade according to grade record for both
undergraduate and master’s program
- Application to admission in the corresponding PhD program (in Economic
History and Institutions), to be found here:

If any of the documents are missing or incomplete by 30 May 2013, there will

take into consideration. IMPORTANT: Send at least the application form before
30 May 2013.

Southern Hemisphere Economic History Summer School

4th Southern Hemisphere Economic History Summer School
Montevideo, 9-13 December, 2013
A joint venture with the universities of Barcelona, Stellenbosch (South Africa) and Wageningen (Netherlands) allows in this occasion the Economic History Program, Universidad de la República, Uruguay, to announce the 4th Southern Hemisphere Economic History Summer School (SHEHSS IV).
In this occasion the SHEHSS IV is willing to attract postgraduate students working on the economic history of developing regions, particularly of Africa and Latin America, in order to stimulate comparative studies.

We aim to gather together a group of 15-20 students, who will present their own research, discuss and comment other student´s papers, receive comments by invited scholars and attend a set of lectures.

The SHEHSS IV is not able to provide financial support to attend the meetings, but will arrange cheap and convenient accommodation in Montevideo for those attending the summer school.

Ci-dessous une annonce pour ce qui est sans conteste la meilleure structure de formation en français sur les méthodes quantitatives. Elle s’adresse tant aux doctorants qu’aux docteurs et chercheurs en poste.
Un des modules est consacré cette année à l’analyse de réseaux, potentiellement très utile en histoire économique.
N’hésitez donc pas à vous inscrire : il faut dégager une grosse semaine, mais cela vaut la peine. Les candidatures sont souvent nombreuses, mais la volonté étant que l’école soit interdisciplinaire, les historien.ne.s peuvent faire l’objet d’une discrimination positive.

Ecole d’été de Lille
en Méthodes Quantitatives des Sciences Sociales

L’Ecole d’été de Lille, plus ancienne école thématique récurrente du CNRS toutes disciplines confondues, est une formation consacrée aux Méthodes quantitatives en sciences sociales. Elle est organisée par le CERAPS (Centre de Recherches Administratives, Politiques et Sociales, UMR 8026) pour la vingt-septième année. Il s’agit d’une des cinq formations de ce type reconnues officiellement par l’ECPR (avec celles de Llubjana, d’Essex, d’Oxford et de Cologne), la seule en langue française.

• Dirigée depuis sa création par Annie Laurent, elle est depuis 2008 sous la responsabilité de Jean-Gabriel Contamin et Emmanuel Pierru , auxquels se sont joints en 2012 Julie Pagis et Etienne Penissat.

• La formation se déroule dans les locaux de l’Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Lille . Elle se compose de six jours et demi de cours (6 à 7 h par jour) avec des ateliers informatiques.

En 2013, l’école d’été aura lieu du jeudi 27 juin au matin au jeudi 4 juillet dans l’après-midi.

• Elle est organisée autour de deux modules :
-l’un, co-organisé avec Dominique Cardon , sur "L’analyse quantitative des données de l’internet"
-l’autre, co-organisé par Pierre Mercklé et Julie Pagis , sur "L’analyse des réseaux".

• Chaque module peut regrouper au plus 20 participants.

Analista económica e investigadora, especialista en temas de política en torno a la industria de tecnologías de la información y las telecomunicaciones en la República Popular China (RPC). Su trabajo actual se centra en los sistemas de financiamiento utilizados en dicho país para el desarrollo de infraestructura, vivienda urbana, carreteras y ferrocarriles, aeropuertos, economía agrícola y los desafíos generados por la conservación de tierras de cultivo.

Ha radicado 22 años en China, fue cofundadora de un grupo de empresas de medios de comunicación en línea llamado Blue Bamboo Ventures, también fundó y operó una compañía de software CRM (Customer Relationship Management): Clarity Data Systems, así como una editorial cuya publicación insignia es la revista Weekend City. Anne Stevenson-Yang también ha trabajado como analista de la industria y el comercio al frente de la United States Information Technology Office (USITO) y de 1993 a 1997 como Directora del área de operaciones en China del United States-China Business Council.

En 2007 fundó J Capital Research Co. Ltd., dicha empresa lleva a cabo investigación independiente sobre cuestiones económicas ofreciendo a sus clientes esquemas de inversión en la RPC. Actualmente la Mtra. Stevenson-Yang se desempeña como Directora de investigación en J Capital.

Se otorgará constancia de participación con el 90% de asistencia al curso (dos inasistencias injustificadas al mismo son causa de baja automática).

The Hertog Global Strategy Initiative (HGSI) seeks talented undergraduate
and graduate students for its 2013 seminar on the History of Climate Change
and the Future of Global Governance.

HGSI is a research program that explores how the world community has
responded to planetary threats to derive lessons that will help us take on
the challenges of the present and the future. Each summer, a select group
of students from across the nation comes to Columbia University for three
months to work with leading scholars and policymakers. This year’s
initiative hopes to train a new generation of researchers and leaders who
understand both the development of climate science and the changing nature
of world politics.

The 2013 seminar will be taught by Matthew Connelly, Professor of History
at Columbia University, and Jim Fleming, Professor of Science, Technology,
and Society at Colby College. They will be assisted in the classroom by
Deborah Coen, Paul Edwards, Mike Hulme, Bill McKibben, Gavin Schmidt, and
nearly a dozen other leaders in the field.

Participants pursue original research both independently and in teams.
Students will receive eight credit points for the seminar, the equivalent
of two semester-long courses at Columbia.
