What Do States Do? Politics and Economic History

The Editors of the Journal of Economic History are pleased to announce the Philip Hoffman’s publication, “What Do States Do?  Politics and Economic History”

We know too little about the huge effect that politics has on economic outcomes, for worse and for better. There are numerous unanswered questions here that economic historians can profitably work on if they model the politics, gather fiscal data, and move beyond the problem of constraining the executive.
